Oral Illnesses You Need to Monitor for Your Oral Health

Oral Illnesses You Need to Monitor for Your Oral HealthThere are many oral illnesses that can affect your mouth, and in turn, they may impact your overall health.

Knowledge is power, so by identifying some of the most common, you can take steps to keep yourself safe.

Gum Disease

Gum disease comes in several forms ranging from gingivitis to periodontitis. When plaque irritates the gums, bacteria levels will increase. The gums will ultimately pull away from the teeth, leading to even further infection and possible tooth loss. If your gums are inflamed, red, or painful, or if it looks like your teeth are getting longer, you should be concerned about gum disease.

Cavities

Many people don't understand that dental cavities are actually a type of dental disease. Cavities are caused by plaque buildup on the teeth, which allows acid to damage the enamel. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent them with proper brushing and flossing. Your dentist will be able to detect a cavity and treat it before it does any more harm to your teeth.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

This disease is most likely found within toddlers and young children. Typically caused by a virus, kids will experience blisters inside of their cheeks, on their lips, and possibly on the tongue. A fever and sore throat are also common, but the infection should disappear on its own within a couple of days.

Oral Cancer

Tens of thousands of Americans suffer from oral cancers each year. Most don't offer any symptoms that you would notice on your own, at least not in the early stages. This is yet another reason why regular visits to your dentist are so important.

If you notice any signs or symptoms of an oral illness, it is time to call your dentist. Give us a call to set up your next appointment. We'll examine your symptoms and will help restore your oral health right away.
