What Are the First Signs of a Cavity?

Posted on 9/30/2018 by Moyer Office
Cavities David R. Moyer Cosmetic & Family Dentistry AZ 85028Cavities are the damaged areas in the enamel (the hard part) of your teeth, which usually develops into tiny holes.

Caused by a range of factors – bacteria, poor teeth cleaning, too much snacking on sugary foods, etc. – cavities are one of the most common teeth problems.

What's unfortunate is that most people come to us when the decay has set in, and sometimes, too late when even our best effort cannot help save their teeth. But what if you could discover the onset of cavities early enough, saving yourself expensive procedures, and possibly the loss of your teeth? Below is a look at some of the early signs of cavities.

Tooth Sensitivity

One of the most common and early signs of cavities is tooth sensitivity, where you get a mild or sharp pain when consuming sugary foods, or cold and hot liquids. The pain can also occur when you apply pressure to the affected tooth/teeth, for example, when brushing or when chewing food.

A Toothache

A toothache is another noticeable sign that usually indicates the onset of cavities. The pain can be mild or sharp depending on how advanced the damage is. It can also be spontaneous or caused by a stimulus – pressure to the teeth, or after consuming sugary foods, and hot/cold liquids.

Stains On The Outer Surface Of Your Teeth

Stains on your teeth can be an indication of a number of things – you drink too much coffee, red wine, cola, or consume foods and drinks that can stain teeth at a regular interval. It can also be caused by prolonged smoking, prolonged exposure to fluoride, antibiotics, bleeding of the teeth, etc.

However, staining can also be an early sign of dental cavities. When the enamel of your teeth starts to erode, one of the resulting consequences is the staining – brown or black spots.

Noticeable Holes In The Teeth

When the damage to your teeth is advanced, it usually results in tiny holes in your teeth, which can be visible to your eyes.

All of the above are some of the early signs, which can help you detect dental decay before it becomes too late. You should, however, note that by the time each of these signs are noticeable, the damage to your teeth has already started.

Therefore, the best way to detect dental cavities is by visiting us regularly. During your routine dental checkup, we can detect early signs of tooth decay and remedy the situation through simple procedures.
