When Is it Time to Seek Help for a Dental Emergency?

Posted on 12/30/2018 by Moyer Office
When Is it Time to Seek Help for a Dental Emergency?Whether a sports injury knocked a tooth loose, or that toothache that just won't go away, there are many different types of crises that can suddenly occur in your mouth. When should you come in and see us for your dental emergency?

The Sooner, The Better
Regardless of the type of emergency, the sooner you are seen, the more likely you are to see a full recovery. Even for situations such as avulsion (a tooth coming out entirely), there are steps that can be taken to ensure that the tooth implants back into the mouth successfully, but they are very time sensitive (typically within 30 minutes for best results.)

For more chronic emergencies, such as flares of pain or occasional numbness, they may be warning signs of underlying issues that need to be diagnosed before they become worse. Pain normally indicates an infection or severe injury, whereas numbness is normally not your brain or body providing relief but the tooth itself dying and no longer sending out those pain signals.

Even the littlest things, like a chipped tooth, may become emergencies if not treated. Abscesses are a possible side-effect of untreated chips, vile fluid-filled sacs that gather pus, rot, and bacteria, then expand until they rupture, spilling their diseased contents into your mouth at best, and your entire bloodstream at worst. A tiny chip can lead to serious illnesses and even death.

No matter what degree and type of emergency you are experiencing, it is imperative that you reach out to us immediately and set up an urgent appointment to get it treated. Never let a problem grow out of control, have us nip it in the bud as soon as possible and get you back to enjoying your smile.
