Are White Spots on Your Teeth Natural?

Posted on 2/28/2019 by Moyer Office
Are White Spots on Your Teeth Natural? Many people have white spots on their teeth, as they arise from a couple of different causes. Dental fluorosis is one of the most common, and it involves consuming too much fluoride as a child.

Enamel hypoplasia, improper dental hygiene, wearing braces, and eating too many sugary or acidic foods can also cause those white spots. While they aren't natural, there are a few steps that you can take to make them less noticeable.

Teeth Whitening

One of the easiest ways to minimize the appearance of white spots on the teeth is with teeth whitening. There are many products available at your local pharmacy, but our dental office also offers professional whitening treatments. These tend to be more effective than the treatments you'd find at your local Walgreens.

Dental Bonding

Bonding your teeth with a composite resin can also help to cover up the appearance of white spots. In cases of enamel hypoplasia, composite resin can fill in cavities and bond the outer enamel. However, this might not be a great option for people who have very large white spots or spots that cover multiple teeth.

Dental Veneers

For severe cases, dental veneers might be recommended. These protective coverings act like thin shells, and they attach to the surface of a person's teeth. They can conceal white spots, blemishes, and other imperfections pretty easily, but you'll need us to put them into place for you. Dental veneers must be professionally fitted and are only available in dental offices.

Microabrasion
Some patients choose to have enamel microabrasion completed to treat white spots. This involves removing a small amount of enamel to reduce the appearance of the white spots. It is important to weigh the pros and cons of this procedure before deciding on it.
