Numbing Options That Involve No Needles

Posted on 7/30/2019 by Moyer Office
Numbing Options That Involve No NeedlesPeople of all ages are deathly afraid of needles. Very few people look forward to getting a shot. Many people avoid visiting our office because they are afraid the visit will involve some type of needle.

While injections of medicine are a good way to numb an area and can help keep many procedures possible, they are not the only option we have for anesthesia. There are things we can do that do not involve the use of needles.

Turning to Gas

It is possible to perform some procedures using nitrous oxide. The gas creates a feeling of euphoria. It is one of the tools that can help calm down people who struggle with dental anxiety. The problem with gas is that it does not block any pain. It only helps people with minor procedures that do not want to see any needles.

The good thing about gas is that it will often help people who struggle with a fear of needles overcome that fear enough to use a stronger anesthesia for the pain. The combination of gas and Novocain or IV anesthesia is another option.

No Needles at All

When gas is not enough, there are other options for needless dentistry. Electronic anesthesia uses a TENS machine to deliver electric pulses to the area that needs numbing. It can help with pain from drilling and cleaning procedures.

Subgingival anesthesia involves the use of a special applicator to apply the anesthesia directly on the affected areas. It is effective for deep cleaning and scaling procedures. A procedure for post procedural pain management is cryo-anesthesia. The use of cold therapy can help people that struggle with pain after procedures or pain from TMJ.

The important thing to recognize is that there are alternatives to anesthesia that do not rely on needles. There is no reason for a person that has a fear of needles to use them as the reason they do not take care of a dental problem they have.
