How Fear Can Decrease Your Oral Health

Fear serves a vital role in self-preservation, and even in keeping our lives on track. The thing that keeps us from engaging in overly risky and dangerous behavior is usually fear.

Likewise, it is fear-of not being able to pay our bills, living on the streets, and so on-that motivates us to maintain a job and be productive members of society. But fear is not always a good thing, and often it can lead to an adverse effect on health. Nowhere is this truer than in the arena of oral health.

Being Afraid of the Dentist

Unfortunately, a fear of the dentist is one of the more common fears that people have. Whether it's due to a bad experience as a child, a concern about the discomfort one may experience during a routine cleaning, or some other reason, many people are afraid to visit the dentist.

People like this often take the view that if they don't go to the dentist, they won't get any bad news. While this may be true in the short term, in the long term this approach virtually guarantees a diagnosis of poor oral health.

There's Nothing to Fear from a Dental Visit

The truth of the matter is, giving into the fear of the dentist will only ensure your need for extensive dental work down the road.

Instead of being afraid, remind yourself that the dental professional you select has been through extensive training and is more than capable of providing the care you need without causing undue duress.

Many dentists even offer sedation dentistry for those who are particularly nervous. You'll go in, sit down, nod off under anesthesia, and wake up with a clean mouth. So don't let fear keep you from getting the dental care you need.
