What is Osseointegration?

Osseointegration describes the formation of a structural and functional connection between the surface of the dental implant and the surrounding alveolar bone. The Dental Implant Process

The procedure is typically broken down into a preparation, which may involve bone grafting, and then two visits. You must have a significant amount of existing bone for osseointegration to occur. Patients who have undergone bone deterioration may need to receive a bone graft. In the most extreme cases, dental implantation may not be possible. This is usually seen in patients who have neglected to restore missing teeth for some years.

Preparation for dental implants

The first implant visit

The first visit involves the surgical procedure for placing a dental implant in the alveolar bone. If necessary, we will perform a tooth extraction to remove any problematic teeth. A gap of 3-6 months is given for osseointegration to occur. If the patient has undergone a bone graft, this process can take much longer, in some cases, over a year.

The second implant visit

After osseointegration is complete, you may need a second surgery. Your gums must be reopened to expose the dental implant and attach the abutment. Before the abutment is installed, we may need to place a healing cap over the implant to properly guide the gum tissue. This all depends on the type of prosthesis and your biological reaction to the implant. In many cases, the abutment can be attached to the dental implant during the first surgery.

An impression is taken of the abutment to get a fabricated crown or fixed bridge from the dental laboratory, and then the final restoration can be placed. The whole process is relatively painless as it is carried out under profound local anesthesia at the Scottsdale dentistry.
