Dental Implants Paradise Valley

Illustration of a dental implant placed in the jaw at David R. Moyer, DDS.Here at David R. Moyer, DDS in Paradise Valley, AZ we understand the difficulties that come with tooth loss. We want all of our patients who have experienced tooth loss to have great tooth replacement options, which is why we offer dental implants.

Dental implants can replace teeth both in form and function. Not everyone who wants dental implants is the ideal candidate for them, however. Because dental implants are surgically placed into the bone of the jaw and rely on the health of your mouth for success, there are some requirements that everyone must meet to be a good candidate for dental implants.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are an object placed directly in the jaw bone, supporting the above-placed crown, bridge prosthesis, denture, and acts to replace or mimic the natural tooth's root.

Are Dental Implants Really Worth it?

"Most studies show that dental implant success rates are between 96 - 99%."

Over the past decade, the success rates from the National Institutes of Health of dental implants have been very high from year to year. Most studies show that dental implant success rates are between 96-99%. We are very proud to boast that we have always had an extremely high dental implant success rate. The reason that we can be so successful with our dental implant placements is that we understand what it takes for a dental implant to survive in the long-term.

Who Needs Dental Implants?

The natural aging process is associated with the loss of teeth due to dental decay, periodontal diseases, trauma, accidents, and wear. It is documented that on average at least one missing tooth is seen with persons aged above 35 years. This situation warrants preventive measures to lessen the occurrence of all risk factors of tooth loss. However, tooth loss does occur and requires immediate replacement of the empty spaces in the mouth with the optimum prosthesis.

Dental Implant Success

Successful implantation is about more than the surgery, it’s about setting the stage for your natural healing to take place. Surgery includes embedding the implant in your jawbone, but healing is the work that your body does afterwards. The healing process is known as osseointegration, or the integration of bone to the device we implanted. Your body already has the tools to do the work, we just want to help your body do it successfully, and by completing some planning steps, we can do that.

How do Implants Compare to Bridges and Dentures?

Removable dentures and Fixed Implant Bridges are the conventional replacement options for lost natural teeth. With the progress in the field of Prosthodontics, dental implants have been evolved as the ultimate replacement for lost natural teeth. Dr. Moyer, your general and cosmetic dentist in Scottsdale Arizona, has revolutionized Scottsdale dentistry with the provision of state of the art dental implant restorations as the artificial replacement of choice for empty tooth spaces in your mouth.

What Types of Dental Implants Are There?

The American Dental Association (ADA) officially recognizes two types of dental implants.
•  Endosteal implants: These implants are surgically implanted into the jawbone. Endosteal implants are connected to a post, which is attached to a restoration.
•  Subperiosteal implants: These implants consist of a metal frame that is fitted onto the jawbone just below the gums. After the frame has fused to the bone, posts are attached to the frame, and prosthetic teeth are mounted to the posts.

Can Anyone get a Dental Implant?

Dr. Moyer will evaluate your overall health conditions to plan the dental implant prosthesis.

Before you can get dental implants, provision needs must first be met:
•  Healthy alveolar bone around the tooth sockets
•  Optimum thickness and width of alveolar bone
•  Location of alveolar bone
•  Periodontal health

What are the Advantages of Dental Implants?

Dental implants have various advantages over conventional dentures and bridges. Dental implants provide:
•  A life-like feeling as they transmit sensations to the surrounding tissues
•  Better aesthetics. Implant-supported restorations look and feel like your natural teeth.
•  Fixed nature (permanent). They are designed to fuse with your jawbone.
•  Preserves and stimulates the formation of new bone around itself.
•  Considered as a permanent replacement of natural teeth due to their long anticipated life and durability.
•  Provide ease in speaking, eating, and smiling. Other alternatives, such as dentures, are often bulky and uncomfortable. They can slip in your mouth and cause you to mumble or have trouble chewing. With dental implants, you will be able to eat all of your favorite foods.
•  No risk of dental decay with artificial teeth
•  No damage to surrounding natural teeth as compared to traditional bridges. Traditional bridges require the adjacent teeth be reshaped to accommodate for each dental crown.
•  Improved self-confidence. You can smile knowing you have a beautiful new smile. Most people will not notice the restoration, and you may even forget you have a dental implant.

How Successful are Dental Implants?

Most patients should not have to worry about implant failure. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), has reported a 98 percent success rate for all dental implant procedures, but implant failure is possible. Patients who smoke are at a significantly greater risk of implant failure. The nicotine in tobacco has been shown to reduce blood circulation to the mouth, which can severely affect healing. It can also reduce the flow of saliva, allowing bacteria to build and increase your chances of infection. If osseointegration fails to occur, the implant is removed, and the bone is cleaned up. We can try the procedure again after a few months.

Are Dental Implants Covered by Insurance?

Unfortunately, most dental insurance companies don't usually cover dental implants, because implants are considered an elective procedure. Be sure to talk to your insurance provider, and learn what is and isn't covered. Some insurance policies might help with the cost of the tooth loss was the result of trauma or a disease.

What is the Cost of Dental Implants?

According to the New York Times, the cost of one dental implant can range from $3,000 to $4,500. However, dental implants can cost more or less depending on location and type of implant. At David R. Moyer, DDS, we offer affordable plans to suit your budget. We work closely with financing companies to provide payment options that best serve each's circumstance. We pride ourselves on providing a comfortable dental experience, and that includes financial comfort.

What is Osseointegration?

Osseointegration describes the formation of a structural and functional connection between the surface of the dental implant and the surrounding alveolar bone. This biological bond helps the dental implant to act as the natural tooth's root, providing support and strength to the crowns placed afterward.

The importance of osseointegration

Dental implants can save you from future bone deterioration. Once you lose your teeth, your jaw lacks the physical stimulation it needs to keep the bone healthy. The bone will begin to break down and return to your bloodstream through a process known as resorption. Osseointegration allows dental implants to provide the physical stimulation needed to stop resorption. This will help you maintain your jawbone and preserve your facial structure. This is also one of the main reasons that implant-related restorations are often considered the best option for missing teeth.

Materials used in the synthesis of implants

Titanium alloys are most commonly used in the preparation of dental implants. Titanium has the required flexibility and elasticity to absorb shocks which act on the prosthesis during chewing, eating, and everyday activities. It also has the unique ability to foster osseointegration. Zirconium oxide can also be used to synthesize the dental implants. Zirconium oxide, when combined with trace amounts of other materials, results in a white opaque-looking substance that is often labeled as ceramic. Abutments, (the posts that connect the restoration to the implant), can be made from Zirconium oxide. This can improve aesthetics, by recreating the translucent properties of natural tooth enamel.

Materials used in the synthesis of the restoration

Most implant-supported dental restorations are made from porcelain or a porcelain composite. Porcelain is an excellent material for recreating the aesthetics of an authentic tooth. It can be sculpted to replicate the texture and light-reflecting properties of natural tooth enamel. Additionally, porcelain possesses a stain resistant quality far superior to other restoration materials. Porcelain is also an exceptionally durable material that can withstand a strong bite force. For patients who grind their teeth or need additional strength, porcelain can be combined with zirconia to create an even more reliable compound.

Types of Restorations Supported by Dental Implants

Dental implants can support some restorations from a single crown to an entire arch of prosthetic teeth.

Dental crowns

Implant-supported dental crowns are used when a single tooth is missing. They can prevent your teeth from shifting and solve any bite-related issues.

Fixed partial bridge

A fixed partial bridge is used when there are several teeth missing from the same region of the mouth. They do not require your surrounding teeth to be reshaped. The preservation of your natural teeth can promote a healthier future for your mouth.

Fixed complete bridge

A complete fixed bridge is used to replace an entire arch of your teeth. They are considered a superior option over other removable prostheses because they can be treated like your natural teeth. Fixed complete bridges can require six or more implants.

All-On-4® Treatment Concept

All on 4 dental implants is a unique way of getting dental implants without having to surgically insert a post for every implant. Instead, it allows us to place the implant on just four anchors on either your top or your bottom jaw bone. Read more about All On Four.

Teeth-in-a-Day

Teeth-in-a-Day is an implant treatment that only requires four dental implants to support a full arch restoration. At David R. Moyer, DDS, we perform Teeth-in-a-Day using an implantation technique that angulates the implants to maximize support. Read more about Teeth-in-a-Day.

Multiple Dental Implants

Teeth-in-a-Day is an implant treatment that only requires four dental implants to support a full arch restoration. At David R. Moyer, DDS, we perform Teeth-in-a-Day using an implantation technique that angulates the implants to maximize support. Read more about Multiple Dental Implants.

Fixed Dentures with Dental Implants

Often we use implants to help keep lower arch dentures firmly in place. They are retained by a thin metal bar or a stud attachment, and should be removed at night to be cleaned. Read more about Fixed Dentures with Dental Implants.

Dentures to Implant Bridge

Implant bridges are quickly becoming an effective and long-lasting alternative to dentures and traditional bridges. They can replace a full set of missing teeth and can offer both a natural look and improved functionality. Read more about dentures and implant bridges.

Suitable Candidates for Dental Implants

Most patients are healthy enough to receive dental implants. Heavy smokers, patients suffering from chronic disorders, such as diabetes or heart disease, and those who have undergone radiation therapy, may have a more difficult time-fighting infection. These risks need to be evaluated on an individual basis. Read more about the significance of Dental Implants.

The Dental Implant Process

The procedure is typically broken down into a preparation, which may involve bone grafting, and then two visits. You must have a significant amount of existing bone for osseointegration to occur. Patients who have undergone bone deterioration may need to receive a bone graft. In the most extreme cases, dental implantation may not be possible. This is usually seen in patients who have neglected to restore missing teeth for some years.

Preparation for dental implants

Dr. Moyer will provide you with dental implants after a thorough history review and examination for evaluation of bone height and quality. This typically involves a series of dental X-rays, molded impressions, and digital scans. After Dr. Moyer has deemed you a suitable candidate for dental implants, we will develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs. This involves your active participation. Make sure to ask questions and voice any concerns. We want you to feel comfortable and excited about your new restoration.

The first implant visit

The first visit involves the surgical procedure for placing a dental implant in the alveolar bone. If necessary, we will perform a tooth extraction to remove any problematic teeth. A gap of 3-6 months is given for osseointegration to occur. If the patient has undergone a bone graft, this process can take much longer, in some cases, over a year.

The second implant visit

After osseointegration is complete, you may need a second surgery. Your gums must be reopened to expose the dental implant and attach the abutment. Before the abutment is installed, we may need to place a healing cap over the implant to properly guide the gum tissue. This all depends on the type of prosthesis and your biological reaction to the implant. In many cases, the abutment can be attached to the dental implant during the first surgery.

An impression is taken of the abutment to get a fabricated crown or fixed bridge from the dental laboratory, and then the final restoration can be placed. The whole process is relatively painless as it is carried out under profound local anesthesia at the Scottsdale dentistry.

After implant surgery

After surgery, you may experience some typical discomforts associated with any oral surgery. If your discomfort worsens as time goes on, you may need antibiotics or pain medications. Some discomforts include:
•  Bruising of the gums. Avoid hot food and drinks during the first 24 hours, and try not to disturb the area with your tongue or fingers.
•  Minor bleeding. If bleeding persists, apply pressure by gently biting down on a dampened gauze pad or a clean piece of cloth, while elevating your head.
•  Swelling of the gums or cheeks. Swelling can be reduced with an ice pack. Hold the ice pack to the cheek for a maximum of ten minutes, at 20-minute intervals.
•  Mild pain at the implant site. After local anesthetic has worn off, you can take over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or Advil. Follow the instructions listed on the label.
•  Be sure to eat soft foods while the incision site heals. This can take 10 to 14 days.

Caring for Your Dental Implants

Dr. Moyer, your general and cosmetic dentist in Scottsdale Arizona, advises you to take care of your dental implants just like natural teeth. Brush and floss your artificial teeth twice daily. Mouth rinses are also advantageous. Schedule regular checkups to make sure your implant and remaining natural teeth are healthy and functioning properly. Also, avoid poor habits that can damage the prosthesis. Do not chew on hard items, and seek out treatment if you grind your teeth. Under the proper care, a dental implant can last decades or even a lifetime.
