Do Dental Implants Become a Part of My Jawbone?
Paradise Valley, AZ

Illustration of a translucent jaw with teeth and one placed dental implant.Dental implants are so successful, because the implant screw mimics the root component of a jawbone. This is in part thanks to the process of osseointegration. Osseointegration occurs when the titanium screw fuses to the bone over an extended period.

Thanks to osseointegration, implants can be used to support a single dental crown, a fixed bridge, or even an entire arch of prosthetic teeth. If you have lost one or more teeth, our team at David R. Moyer, DDS can help you restore the esthetics and function of your smile with dental implants.

How a Dental Implant Fuses to Your Jawbone

1.  Post: The first and most crucial part of a dental implant is the implant screw. The implant screw is made from titanium and surgically embedded into the jawbone. Implant screws are made from titanium because of its unique ability to fuse with living bone. In recent years, implant screws and abutments have also been fabricated with zirconia due to its aesthetic value. Zirconia is also a biocompatible material that can support the forces of your bite.
2.  Abutment: Once the healing process is complete, the implant screw is then attached to an abutment or support structure. In some cases, the abutment may be placed at the same time as the implant screw.
3.  Restoration: This support structure links the top of the implant screw to the restoration. Most restorations these days are made from porcelain, zirconia, or some other ceramic compound. These materials offer the very best in aesthetics and durability. Most restorations are made from porcelain compounds because they contain the same light-reflective properties as natural enamel, and they are biocompatible. That means these materials will not affect the gum tissues or cause an allergic reaction.

After Fusing, Dental Implants Heal During Osseointegration

In most cases, we must allow the healing and osseointegration processes to finish before we place an abutment. The process of osseointegration can take up to six months or more. If multiple implants are involved, it may take even longer. It is important to let the jawbone grow into and unite with the surface of the dental implant. This will provide a solid foundation for your new restoration, one that rivals the strength of your natural teeth.

After the initial surgery, you may experience the typical discomforts associated with any oral surgery. These include: swelling of the gum and facial tissues, bruising of gum and facial tissues, pain at the surgical site, and minor bleeding. If any of these discomforts worsen in the days following surgery, be sure to contact us immediately. Dr. Moyer will be able to determine the source of the problem and provide a remedy.

Dental Implants are Superior to Other Restorations

Many of the benefits of dental implants stem from osseointegration. Some of these benefits include:
•  Durability: You will be able to chew, smile, laugh, and speak with confidence and comfort.
•  Easy maintenance: You can brush and floss your restoration as you would your normal teeth. These are not needed for special appliances.
•  Improved appearance: Your implant is supported by the bone, eliminating the need for metal clasps or abutment teeth, and providing a more natural appearance.
•  Bone preservation: The implant screw will provide physical stimulation to keep the bone healthy and strong.
