Dental Implant Success
Paradise Valley, AZ

Image of a dental implant at David R. Moyer, DDS.Dental implants have been shown to have an extremely high rate of success. This is due in large part to the work that is completed before their placement. At David R. Moyer, DDS, we understand that the planning phase is important. We will walk you through the process and customize treatment to meet your needs. Dental implants come with a variety of options both in which implant and prosthetic are being used. Finding the right treatment and following the guidelines can make a significant difference in the long term success. We can help you have beautiful, functional teeth.

Successful implantation is about more than the surgery, it’s about setting the stage for your natural healing to take place. Surgery includes embedding the implant in your jawbone, but healing is the work that your body does afterwards. The healing process is known as osseointegration, or the integration of bone to the device we implanted. Your body already has the tools to do the work, we just want to help your body do it successfully, and by completing some planning steps, we can do that.

Before the Implant is Placed

A huge portion of the dental implant process is completed in the planning phase. During your consultation we will need to discuss several factors including:
•  Missing Teeth: We will want to examine the teeth that are missing or unhealthy. This may include a single tooth, multiple teeth in a grouping, or multiple teeth in various locations in your mouth. This discussion will help us determine the best prosthetic treatment for you.
•  Determine Bone Mass: When a tooth is lost, there is an immediate and ongoing atrophy to the bone that occurs. Most dental implant treatments will require a bone graft before the implant can be placed to bulk up the bone mass. An implant retained full arch bridge, known as All-on-4® Treatment Concept, does not generally require a bone graft due to the extended length and angle the implants are placed.
•  Medical Health: Many of our patients, even our more medically delicate ones, are able to have a dental implant placed. Dental implant surgery is minimally invasive. The determining factor is how the patient is able to heal. There are certain conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes or cancer treatment that can impact how a patient heals, preventing candidacy. There are also certain medications that can limit healing, or personal habits such as smoking tobacco or marijuana. We are happy to discuss all of these factors with you and can even discuss changes with your physician before treatment is completed. Be sure to disclose any and all medications you are taking, even if it seems irrelevant to your oral health.
•  Control Gum Disease: A common reason for the loss of teeth is gum disease. Gum disease wreaks havoc on your gum tissue, your bone tissue, and it is an active bacterial infection in your mouth. We want to gain control of your gum disease prior to treatment. Healthy tissue and lessening the chance of infection developing can be important to the success of treatment.

By the time we place your dental implant, we have already completed the steps to help your body successfully bond with the implant. Your bone is robust, your body should be able to heal, and any infection from gum disease is under control. We will discuss your post surgical steps and what you should look for following treatment.

Studies have shown that restorations completed using dental implants have a very high rate of long term success. In fact, they have even been shown to have the highest rate of success over any other dental restoration. This is because we are working with the bone and reestablishing the bond between the bone and tooth, meaning it’s much closer to what nature intended.
