Why Should I Choose Multiple Tooth Implants to Replace My Missing Teeth?

Dental implants are now a common option for replacing missing teeth, having been in use now for over half a century. Dental implants have an advantage over other teeth replacement options, such as dentures, because they are permanent, secure, do not come loose, and do not require any special cleaning or adhesives. You can treat dental implants like your own regular teeth. They do not require any special care, just regular brushing and flossing daily, as you would with your own teeth.

Multiple tooth dental implants also have an advantage over dental crowns and dental bridges because, unlike dental crowns, multiple tooth dental implants do not require healthy teeth to be filed down to accommodate them, so you do not need to lose any more of your teeth or tooth structure. Plus, a dental implant takes the place of a tooth root and stimulates the cells in the jawbone which keeps the jawbone strong and healthy. A problem when teeth are lost is that the jawbone tends to resorb as it is receiving no stimulation from the forces exerted through biting and chewing. This weakens your jawbone and also causes your facial features to appear sunken and for you to look older than you are.

What Are the Options for Replacing Teeth With Multiple Tooth Dental Implants?

Single Dental Implants

Although a single dental implant is used to replace one tooth, it does not mean that you cannot have more than one single dental implant in your mouth. In fact, it is possible to replace every single tooth with a single dental implant, but this is likely to be an impractical and expensive tooth replacement option for the majority of the people out there. This is why some of the other dental implant options may be a better choice for you.

Implant-Supported Bridge

If you have several missing teeth in a row, an implant-supported bridge is a good tooth replacement choice for you. In common with a traditional dental bridge, an implant-supported bridge is permanently fixed, replacing several teeth. Rather than your own teeth being on each side of the gap, receiving dental crowns to support the bridge implants are inserted next to your natural teeth which will support the bridge. For example, if you have three missing teeth, two crowned dental implants on each side of the gap will hold a crown to cover the middle space.

The placement of single dental implants requires healthy, viable bone for the treatment to be effective. We can discuss which dental implant option is best for you after your initial consultation with us.

All-on-4® Treatment Concept

If your smile is not up to your expectations or if you have teeth that have been compromised by damage or decay, a new form of dental implant may be the answer. Advancements in dental science and technology have led to All-on-4 dental implants that give old teeth a new dimension.

The All-on-4 Treatment Concept is a permanent, fixed tooth replacement option. Just four dental implants can be placed in either the top or bottom jaw and a complete arch of teeth is then attached to replace all of the teeth. Due to the specific placement of the dental implants in the jaw, and the fact that the implants used in this procedure are longer than single dental implants, the All-on-4 may be a suitable treatment for patients suffering from bone loss.

Since All-on-4 dental implants is a precision-based procedure, it is best to have it performed at a trusted dental office like us here at David R. Moyer, DDS.

Implant-Supported Dentures

An implant-supported denture is another possibility for patients, which combines the convenience of a removable denture for cleaning, with the stability of dental implants to keep the denture secure and in place. The denture simply snaps on and off as required but remains secure during the rest of the time. This allows eating, drinking, talking, and laughing to be carried out with complete comfort and confidence. The procedure for implant-supported dentures also requires a viable amount of bone to surround the dental implant for the bone and implant to fuse together effectively.

Who is a Candidate for Dental Implants?

We want to see how our smile looks in the mirror. It is the first thing people see when they meet us, and we want it to look and feel as good as possible.

Any patient who maintains a high level of oral cavity health and who is in good overall medical health is considered an excellent candidate for dental implants. Anyone who has been considering dental implants as an artificial tooth solution should come into our office to have an assessment done and determine if dental implants are a good tooth replacement option for them.

While dental implants come in several different forms and are a great option to replace missing teeth, unfortunately not everyone is a prime candidate for the dental implant procedure. There are specific risk factors that are taken into account before determining how viable the patient is for the procedure. While these do not make it impossible for the patient to have dental implants, it does greatly complicate and sometimes delays the procedure.

Some risk factors include smoking, excessive drinking, and certain medical conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. These are going to cause a delay and potential risk to the healing process. Patients with a weak jawbone may not initially be good candidates for dental implants; however, they can have a bone grafting procedure before they receive dental implants to strengthen up their jawbone.
