Cleanings and Exams
Phoenix, AZ

Mature woman eager to get a dental cleaning and exam.
Having your teeth professionally cleaned and then examined by Dr. Moyer is part of maintaining a healthy routine for your mouth. We use this time to spot and then remove any harmful bacteria, while also looking for symptoms of potentially larger issues. Our hygienist reviews the status of your gum health and removes tartar and plaque buildup which is then followed by an examination from Dr. Moyer to look for any potential disease, pathology and decay. Our team at David R. Moyer Cosmetic & Family Dentistry can help you have a stronger, healthier mouth.

Dental Cleaning

A dental cleaning is performed by our professional hygienist, who is trained to spot the symptoms of gum disease, determine the level of progression and then take the steps to help restore their health. Our hygienist also assesses the level of plaque development, removes calculus and determines what further steps need to be taken to maintain a cleaner mouth. This may include brushing and flossing techniques to improve the steps taken at home.

A typical dental cleaning generally involves:
•  Gum Health Assessment Examining the gum tissue, does it appear red, puffy or irritated? Does it bleed to the touch or when brushing? These could be symptoms of gingivitis or gum disease also known as periodontal disease.
•  Tracking and Measuring: We then measure and track the gum pockets. This is the amount of separation between the tooth and gums. Gum pockets greater than .3mm is an indication that disease is present. With our continuing patients, we can compare the measurements from previous cleanings which is extremely helpful in determining the development of gum disease.
•  Scaling and Root Planing: Scaling is a cleaning step taken in most adult dental cleanings. Using an ultrasonic scaler, we spray a directed stream of oxygenated bubbles along with a vibrating tip to safely remove hardened tartar and calculus from the enamel. Once most material has been removed, the hygienist will then use a hand scaling tool to check for any remaining material. After scaling, root planing may need to be done in specific areas. This is the smoothing of the tooth roots that have become jagged or crumpled from tartar.
•  Polishing: With the plaque and tartar removed, the final step is removing any extrinsic or surface stains with polishing. We use a rotary brush and a toothpaste that is gritty in texture to polish the teeth.

Dental Exam

A dental exam is generally done once a year, though this may vary depending on the patient’s needs. Having your teeth examined by Dr. Moyer can play a very important role in your oral health. We look for small potential problems as well as large developed problems.

Dental examinations often include:
•  Digital x-Ray Images: Radiology is an incredible tool, it allows us to take a peak at areas that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Using x-rays, we can spot growths, disease below the gumline or inside of teeth, the development of roots and teeth including impacted teeth and other potential problems. Today’s digital technology allows us to take large, clear images that are saved in an online file making them easy to retrieve, impossible to lose, and easy to share when needed.
•  Decay Assessment: Besides the assessment done in your dental cleaning, we look for areas that can be missed through regular brushing. The nooks and crannies of back molars are prime locations for decay and caries or cavities to hide. Our younger patients often receive dental sealants to protect these spots.
•  Oral Cancer Screening: Screening for oral cancer is a quick and easy process. Using a probe, we simply check for any unusual developments in the tissue. This can include changes in the coloring, texture or the growth of lumps and bumps.
