The Best Age For Braces

You may be considering getting braces and have some questions. Some common questions about braces are how you will afford them, how long you have to wear them, and what the best age is to get them. The most common reasons people need braces are when teeth are overlapping, crooked, or overcrowded. Other reasons people may need braces are when their speech is affected, gum disease or tooth loss, teeth grinding, or jaw problems. Types of Braces There are many options to choose from for braces, such as traditional, ceramic, and lingual braces and clear aligners. Traditional braces are the most common type of braces. They are made of stainless steel that is high grade and use archwires and metal brackets to straighten your teeth. Ceramic braces work the same as traditional braces, but they are made of transparent ceramic. The wires can also be made transparent and have a less noticeable appearance. Lingual braces are also similar to traditional braces but what sets them apart is that their brackets and wires are placed on the inside of the teeth instead of the outside. Clear aligners are made out of mouth guard type plastic and custom-made. They are also removable and get replaced every two to three weeks. Most Common Age to Get Braces There is no set age for when a child, teenager, or adult should get braces. However, some dentists will suggest that a child starts to go to an orthodontist when they are as young as six years old. Some kids may start seeing an orthodontist when they are ten years old, and others may wait until they are in their teen years. It is recommended that a person wait until all of their baby teeth are gone and after their second molars start to grow in.
