Sleep Apnea Treatment & Diagnosis

Couple in bed snoring at David R. Moyer Cosmetic & Family Dentistry.

If you snore excessively and awaken always feeling unrested no matter how much sleep you get, you could likely have sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is caused by the same thing that causes snoring; only the blockages prevent air from passing through completely. This means that the patient is unable to breathe, causing them to wake up quickly. This can happen numerous times throughout the night making it very difficult for the patient to get enough sleep.

On your first visit to our office, our specialists will inform you about the benefits of oral appliance therapy during your dental exam. A clinical evaluation will then be conducted by examining your jaw, teeth, airway, and tongue using methods such as the mouth x-ray. Using physical or digital models and images of your teeth, our experts will customize your oral appliances and send models to a dental lab for creating the appliance. You will have to return for fitting of the appliance once it is ready. The necessary adjustments will be made on the device to make it more effective and comfortable.

Oral Appliance Therapy

When it comes to oral appliance therapy, you can count on the team at David R. Moyer Cosmetic & Family Dentistry. Our expert team has the know-how and experience to provide the best appliances available.

An oral appliance looks very much like a standard mouthguard, and it is made to be worn at night when you are sleeping. The main difference between oral appliances and standard mouthguards is that they are designed to help keep the jaw forward at night when you are sleeping. This is to help overcome snoring and sleep apnea. If you are suffering from excessive snoring and sleep apnea, then come and visit us so that we can explain how we can be of service. Our clients so far have been delighted at the results of the treatment we offer.

Snoring

In keeping the jaw forward at night when the patient is sleeping, the device helps to prevent blockages from occurring at the back of the throat. These blockages restrict the airways and can cause snoring. In some cases, snoring can be a real problem for people, especially partners of the patient. In preventing these blockages, an oral appliance can also prevent snoring, helping people to get a good night’s sleep. Many of our patients come to us looking for help with snoring problems and are happy with the results that oral appliance therapy provides.

The Procedure

First of all, our specialists will talk with you to find out just what your symptoms are. This can help us to determine just what the problem is and how best to treat it. We will always explain every option to you thoroughly and ask any question that you may have.

Oral appliances for this treatment are made to fit. They need to be as comfortable as possible because they will need to be worn when you are sleeping. Our team will take an impression of your dental structure to have an appliance made just for you. Once the appliance is complete, our team will do what we can to make sure that the appliance fits perfectly and is as comfortable as it can be. We will also inform you of any side effects that may potentially arise. The procedure involves no surgery, and you will not feel any discomfort during the procedure.
